Even though planning the History Festival in the spring takes an entire year to do, the Living Historians like to go to other festivals, weekend events and fairs to particiate with other re-enactors to depict the history of our great state and the past of our nation.  The following listing below have been other events we have gone to.  Please feel free to click on any picture to enlarge it to view it better.

Beck's Mill Civil War Days

LivingHistoriansBecksMill02.jpg
On 14 August 2010, the Living Historians went to celebrate the second annual Civil War Days at Beck's Mill, near Salem, Indiana.  Attending the event were Norm and Annette Taylor, Doug and Lori Roberts, Jim and Diana Gossert and Stephen Bowman.  Many other members of our troup wanted to attend but couldn't due to work or prior commitment.  However, the few of us who did go, had a wonderful day watching at Morgan's Raiders come foraging for food and supplies.

While the others were outside lounging under a shade tree, Stephen was sent inside the mill building with the other crafters on hand to make lace.  Stephen making lace?  Huh, shocking isn't it?  However, being on the second floor gave him the best view to watch all the happenings that went on during the day's events.

Lanier Days Civil War Weekend in Madison, IN

Living Historians at Lanier Mansion
On the second weekend of June 2009, the Living Historians went Madison, IN to attend the Lanier Day's Civil War event held annually on the grounds of the Lanier Mansion.   Though the weather ended up being very foggy in the morning and then even more humid in the afternoon, everyone had a wonderful time over the weekend.

Confederate soldiers advance on the field
Norm and Matt were asked to participated in the battle as Confederate soldiers, as there were more Union forces than Confederate that weekend.   The two were more than happy to help out to make the numbers of the opposing forces more even.  However, the Union troops were forced to rethink that idea when the rebel forces took the battle.

Stephen also attended the weekend and once again displayed lace making, (does he do anything else?) on the upper tier of the grounds just behind the mansion itself.  However, be warned, he's not nice before 10am.

Downtown Bedford came alive on Friday evening, June 5th, 2009.  Historic cars ringed the courthouse and crowds formed to buy strawberry shortcake from the BRI Historic Preservation Committee.  The Dulcimer Society provided music, the Lawrence County Victorian Dancers demonstrated Civil War-era dancing, and the visual displays were in abundance, thanks to the Dulcimer Society, Half Moon Limestone, the Lawrence County Art Association and the Old Jail Art Center.

World War II Action

FtBenHarrison01.jpg

Joe & Lara Zilafro, our resident World War II experts, have been very busy this year also.  The couple, pictured to the left, were camped at Fort Benjamin Harrison where they provided demonstrations of the lifestyle of a german soldier and Joe later participated in the battle re-enactment.

Joe, seen here with another German soldier re-enactor, fought in a battle at the Fort Knox Re-enactment.  In September Joe and Lara travel to this event to participate in this early to mid-twentieth century event.

Don't you think this is what Wonder Woman would have looked like if she had went to Germany instead of the United States?

Ohio Renaissance Fair

Over the Labor Day Weekend, our members and friends, Angie, Maggie and Dorothy Timan, Nina Peterson & Cherie Barnes went to the Ohio Renaissance Fair.  Everyone had a great time.

CandleLightTour10.jpg
The 2009 Tri-Kappa's Annual Candlelight Tour is held every year on the third weekend in September in the Pioneer Village in Spring Mill State Park as the kick off to the Persimmon Festival in nearby Mitchell, IN.

This was no different from any other and the Living Historians were on hand to help make the event a success.  Norm and Annette Taylor, Matt Miller, Kelly Huntzinger, Heather Couch and Elizabeth Wilbur were encamped near the Blacksmith's shop, while Angie Timan was portraying school teacher and Hamer sister, Nancy Crofoot in the nursery with daughter Maggie.

Stephen Bowman was on hand with Dorothy Timan and Brooke Fredrick in the dining room of the Thomas Hamer house demonstrating lace making.  Dorothy and Brooke gave demonstrations and helped Stephen out whenever he had an errand to do.

Memorial Day Weekend at Spring Mill

Please Grandpa, don't go to war!

Our boys in blue, Norm and Matt.

Every year on Memorial Day weekend, the Living Historians like to attend the Civil War re-enactment at Spring Mill State Park's Pioneer Village and attend the dedication ceremony at the Hamer Cemetary.  In 2009 the event was called "On the Homefront" and featured confederate soldiers, union soldiers and various other civilian re-enactors from that time period.

Despite the heavy rain shower that we experienced that morning, Greg, Annette, Norm, Matt, Heather, Kelly and the kids patriotically decided to walk up the Hamer Cemetary from the Pioneer Village.  Stephen had been caught by a group of tourists and was doing a lace making demo at the time, so he had been spared the down pour of rain that met the group after the ceremony at the cemetary began.

Sleep Overs at Spring Mill

TavernWeekend11.jpg
At the Tavern in the Pioneer Village
The Living Historians took over the Tavern building in the Pioneer Village at Spring Mill State Park.  Norm, Annette, Kelly, Matt and the kids stayed overnight in the Tavern building and apparently they had other visitors with them that day.  First a racoon attempted to join them for dinner and then later in the night a ghostly presence came in to oversee the evening.  Greg, Sharon and Stephen was not happy that they weren't able to join the others in the fun.

August 15th at the Hugh Hamer house

On the 15th and 16th August 2009 the Living Historians took over the Hugh Hamer house and the Mill office building in the Spring Mill Pioneer Village.  Norm and Matt began recruiting men for the regiment in the Mill office, while Annette, Greg, Heather and Stephen entertained tourists on the front porch of the Hugh Hamer house.  Kelly had to work that morning and missed out on getting her picture taken, but Heather brought her son Braxton with her.

Fourth of July Weekend at Spring Mill

4thJuly2009-04.jpg

This Independence Day weekend Spring Mill State Park hosted a variety of re-enactors and demonstrators in the Pioneer Village.  Among them were a group of seamstresses who took over the tavern, a cook who took over the upper residence, the 5th Virginia Company D, who demonstrated on the green by the mill and lastly, Stephen who took his lace making display to the lower residence.  Dispite a downpour of rain on the 4th of July, the village saw over 300 visitors to the park come through and learn about history.
